Gippsland Based Coffee Roasters

The Bean Pedlar is a new establishment right in the heart of Yarram, situated in a building with a rich cultural history. Growing up in Yarram, The Bean Pedlar owner Robert Drakeford fondly recalls visiting stores in the local area, and remembers them as community meeting places that formed an important part of his life. That’s exactly what he’s hoping to bring to the Yarram community.

A Cultural Coffee Experience

The Bean Pedlar imports and roasts coffee beans from all over the world, offering customers a great range of choices and a place to gather with friends.

At The Bean Pedlar, you don’t just get a great cup of coffee, but a memorable experience thanks to the unique atmosphere and rich history. We want people to take in the smells and the sounds of coffee roasting, and the wonderful social aspects this brings.

A Rich History in Yarram

The mural inside The Bean Pedlar’s shop is important part of the building, as it depicts the rich history of the building. The beautiful artwork shows the transition of the former building to its current life as The Bean Pedlar. The original artwork depicts Victor Hugo Mattern, a son of Franz Peter Mattern who established Mattern’s hardware on the site back in the 1887. The building remained in the Mattern family for four generations until purchased by new owner Robert Drakeford’s family in 2019.

The second half of the mural shows this transition, with Robert, his parent’s dog Dougal, a coffee field and coffee beans. It’s important to Robert that the long history of the building is honoured in the beautiful artwork inside the store. In fact, the previous owner has now retired to Sydney, but is extremely proud to see his family history featuring on a mural at the site.

A True Community Business

Robert is extremely passionate about the Yarram community, and hopes his new venture, The Bean Pedlar, will start giving back to the community he loves.

He appreciates how much the area has given to his family, which is one of the reasons he chose to honour the rich history of the business site with a huge mural inside the store.

While the store itself is entering a new chapter of life, the past is never forgotten. Robert aims to create a brand-new attraction in the Gippsland area, giving locals and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee in a beautiful setting.
